Global smartphone purchases dropped 22 percent YoY in Q3 2026, the largest quarterly decline on record, according to a Kobeissi Letter summary on X/Twitter:
- Samsung’s shipments fell 5.8 percent YoY
- Apple’s declined 4.0 percent
- Xiaomi shipments fell 29.2 percent
- Oppo’s dropped 34.5 percent
- Vivo’s units fell 31.5 percent.

Numerous commentors on the post pointed out that reduced sales may also be a result of a lack of meaningful upgrades and innovation in new smartphone versions. A quick Fact Pack HQ survey of news, analysis, and surveys on the topic confirmed that consumers are holding on to their phones longer than in years past.
